Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has claimed that while artificial intelligence (AI) can currently replace humans in simpler tasks, it is not yet capable of handling the most complex coding tasks. In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria, Gates discussed the rapid progression of AI. He mentioned that experts in the field are divided on whether AI will achieve this capability within the next one to two years or if it is still a decade away. However, Gates emphasized that AI is "improving at a rate that surprises" him. Gates differentiated between basic AI and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which has become a common topic of discussion.
What Bill Gates said about AI's progression
In the interview, available on YouTube, Gates expressed, "People talk about writing code. Simple coding tasks, AI today can replace human work. The most complex coding tasks, it's not able to do it yet. People in the field disagree on whether this will happen in the next year or two, or if it is more like ten years away. But AI is improving at a rate that surprises me. Things like this deep research capability. A few times a day I take a complex question and see that AI does an awfully good job, gathering all the materials and summarizing what I need to know."
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on AI's impact on different types of jobs
Gates explained how AI's ability to substitute labor or human creativity can impact various jobs. He mentioned, "People use very different definitions. AI could make jobs like telesales or telesupport more cost-effective and accurate than humans. This looks at labor substitution. On the other hand, AI could also assist in creative endeavors like developing new drugs. The question is whether AI is just aiding humans or eventually replacing them." The interviewer also inquired about AI's impact on roles involving pattern recognition and the potential challenges for college-educated graduates in finding jobs in such fields. Responding to this, Bill Gates stated, "Improving productivity is key. It allows for more opportunities. The speed at which AI advances raises questions about adaptation. Blue-collar work may also be affected by AI developments. These changes are profound, and efforts are being made to ensure AI benefits low-income countries in areas like health, education, and agriculture."
