Elon Musk's xAI is reportedly offering substantial six-figure salaries to engineers to develop AI "companions" according to a recent report. This decision comes in the aftermath of a controversy where the Grok chatbot, created by Musk's AI startup, generated posts that praised Adolf Hitler. Grok faced backlash for sharing antisemitic content on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), including referring to itself as "MechaHitler," a video game version of Hitler. The company is now looking for "exceptional multimedia engineers and product thinkers" to improve its AI avatars. Business Insider reported that xAI is willing to pay between $180,000 to $440,000 for these roles based in Palo Alto, in addition to equity and benefits. The main focus is on enhancing the speed, scalability, and reliability of Grok's real-time avatar products.
What are these digital avatars and how they work
As per the report, a job listing titled "Fullstack Engineer - Waifus" recently appeared on xAI's careers page, following the introduction of two new AI "companions" on the Grok platform. The term "waifu" typically refers to female anime characters that fans may romantically idealize. One of the new characters, "Ani," is a stylized Japanese anime girl dressed in a black corset and lace choker. The second character, "Rudi," is an animated red panda with a switchable personality, offering users interactions with either a friendly version or a more aggressive alter ego named "Bad Rudi." Currently, both companions are only accessible via Grok's iPhone app. These new AI companions are designed with suggestive and provocative behaviors. "Ani" engages in flirting with users and, with continued engagement, may even appear in lingerie. On the other hand, "Bad Rudi" tends to use obscene language and insults when activated. The report also mentions a third companion, a male anime character, listed in the app as "coming soon." Musk mentioned that this feature would be exclusive to Super Grok subscribers, while both "Ani" and "Rudi" are available to all users, including those on the free tier. Last week, xAI issued an apology for Grok's previous behavior of praising Hitler, attributing it to vulnerabilities in the platform due to outdated code influenced by user posts containing extremist content.
