Changes in Tatkal Ticket Booking Rules: What You Need to Know

In a significant update to Indian railways' ticketing policy, the Ministry of Railways has announced that starting from July 1, 2025, only users with Aadhaar verification will be able to book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC platform. This move aims to enhance digital identity authentication, prevent misuse, increase transparency, and ensure emergency ticketing services reach genuine passengers. Following this, an additional OTP-based Aadhaar verification layer will be implemented from July 15, 2025, to streamline the process further. The directive from the Indian Railways comes in response to the rise in demand during festival seasons and complaints regarding booking manipulation by unauthorized agents. Here's a breakdown of the new regulations, implementation timeline, agent restrictions, and essential booking tips for all passengers:

1. Aadhaar Verification Mandatory

From July 1, only passengers who have completed Aadhaar authentication on the IRCTC website and app can book Tatkal tickets.

2. Additional OTP Verification from July 15

Starting July 15, 2025, even authenticated users must undergo OTP verification associated with their Aadhaar number for each Tatkal booking.

3. Restrictions on Agent Bookings

To curb bulk bookings and ensure fair play: - IRCTC agents are barred from booking Tatkal tickets in the first 30 minutes of the booking window. - Timings for different ticket classes have been specified for agent bookings. These restrictions will be enforced across all zones, with instructions issued to CRIS and IRCTC to implement the changes in their systems.

The Railway Ministry's objectives include preventing misuse by intermediaries, improving ticket availability for last-minute travelers, enhancing transparency, and promoting equitable ticket allocation while discouraging unfair booking practices.
